Poster Analysis of One Day

This is a film poster of the film called 'One Day'. The purpose of the film is to advertise the film in order to attract the audience to watch it. Posters may be displayed in many places such as billboards, bus stops, magazines, etc. Because the poster is advertised in many different places, this will make sure that all social groups will see this. In some cases, for those who enjoyed to watch the film, some may purchase the poster and place it on their bedroom wall so it can be used as a form of display. Which again, achieves it main focus of advertising.

The only colour that has been used here on the poster are orange, pink, and sepia. The secondary bright colours of orange and pink looks very effective because it makes the poster stand out. The sepia effect on the image gives an old-fashion look on the poster. The poster is giving out hints for the audience because the two actors has been waiting for 20 years to be together, it turned out that the colour on the photo has turned sepia to give a sense of oldness and vintage effect. Also the colour orange signifies desperation and crave of something which may link on the image on how the two actors seems to look excited as they kiss and embrace showing their affection in one another. Also, the colour orange represents sexuality and power as if the two actors are healed as they are now in together in each others arms. The colour pink may signify the universal of love which also means "I will never forget you" which relates well with the genre of romance. The colour pink also provides the feeling of caring, tenderness and acceptance, which helps the audience to acknowledge the conventions of love and romance. The foreground of the poster consist of a white colour that symbolise purity which is exemplified on the image showing the pureness of their love. It is also associated with perfection, as if their intensed love is surrounded with perfection. White can also symbolise marriage which strongly expresses the theme of love and romance within the film.

The overall visual of this poster is that it is very obvious that the genre of this film is romance due to the image of the two actors (Emma and Dexter) passionately kissing. The image looks very unconventional because of how the 20 snapshots are taken to create one image. The image looks likes a jigsaw puzzle which some audience may already know why if they have read the book. There are 20 polaroid print outs that may provide hints for the audience that the two have been waiting for 20 years to be together. The photo print outs seems to be canted a little to suggests how challenging it was for them every year. A long shot two shot is used to allow the audience survey the setting, which also appears to be dynamic due to the movement of Emma's hair and dress that seemed to be flying from the caused of the wind. The action between these two lovers adds to the intense feeling of passion as the scene seems to be very romantic and stirring, as if the two ran to one another with excitement. The theme of love and passion is identified throughout the film which is highlighted within the two main characters.

We can see that the two actors seems to be very intact at one another as Emma wrapped her arms above his shoulders and how Dexter places his one hand on her neck that identifies the passion and lust for each other. The background of the image seems to be a cold, normal, busy day that contrasts well with the two because of the warmth and protection they provide from one another, and also the actions of the characters seems to be very sterotypical about romance.

The image seems to be very realistic as if the two lovers has just started to embrace one another. The image is a real photograph during filming which again, adds a realistic effect rather that using animations. The emotion and expressions of the characters in the poster attracts many audience which they may also feel emotional.

The font seems to standing out the most than the picture because of the use of colour used on this poster. If the text was left black, then the image would probably stand out more. The title 'One Day' acts to be exciting and jolly which may refer back to the image as both characters seems to be longing for love and also the audience may take notice of this colour because they may also be desprate to be loved which could attract them to watch this film about love and passion.  the font is very simple and basic which may reflect back to the maturity of the film and also to draw against the main image intself. The use of italic on some texts increases the theme of love and romance. Also, at the very top of the poster, the sentence "Based on the #1 International bestseller", may attract book lovers to watch this film especially for those who has read this book that they may have found inspiring.

"Twenty years, two people ..." is the tagline that is used on this poster. This tagline doesn't really provide much hint for the audience but at some point the word 'twenty' refers back to how many photo polaroid print outs there are to make a whole picture, which has the same dates on each one but different years. And also, 'two people' also refers back to the image having two characters placed on the mian image. Some audience may call this as 'fate' or 'destiny' or 'meant to be' which suggests that love can only decide whether to believe in it rather than just seeing on what meets the eye.
I think that this poster is targeted for young adults at over the age of 16 as the poster seems to be mature and emotional. It may appeal to all genres especially for those who are interested in love and romance, and also for those who categorised themselves as single or in a relationship.

Overall, the poster really appeals to me well because the poster provides a sense of passionate romance yet a sense of enigma too because we tend to wonder why the poster is designed to look like this. The dates on the polaroid print outs really interests me because it plays well with mystery. For my poster, I would like to add a sense of mystery to it by not giving away too much for the audience. Because fo this idea, people would be more engaged to watch the film.
