Poster - second attempt

I am not really happy with this poster because I dont think that its that successful enough to be a poster. Also, I have noticed that I made a mistake on my strapline, which should be ".. but everything that happens has a reason." The only think that I like about this poster is the photoediting as I turned the image to look like pop art. However, I believe that making the image look pop art doesnt give the poster a sense of romantism, which some people may think of this film as a rom-com. Also, the strap line seems too long, which may bore the audience from reading it.

As you can see, I edit my film poster in Photoshop to be able to achieve a professional looking poster.

Experimenting with Fonts for my Film Poster

Here are some few examples of fonts that I have been experimenting on so that I could use for my poster and magazine cover. The font that I am aiming for is just a simple font so that people will be able to recognise and understand it straight away. As you can see, I chose to use Picnik to pick my chosen font because they offer a variety of fonts there for free. I am not quite fond of the font style that I have chosen although I do have an idea that I should stick with a simple font like Impact.

Film Poster

This was my first attempt on creating my film poster. I didn't like the shape of the hourglass because I feel that it didn't look like one and also I feel that I am wasting space.

I have created this poster in Photoshop, which I feel that it's still unfinished. I would like to add more images in the hourglass and I also need to consider adding more spaces at the bottom for the credits to be placed. I don't feel that the tagline is "catchy" enough for the audience to grab their attention to, so I would need to think about that also. I used the colour beige for the background because I have noticed that a lot of romantic film poster uses this colour and I would like to stick with the conventions.

Photos for my Poster

These are some images that I will add to my collage in the film poster. The plan is to cut other people out of the picture and only keep the two main characters. Some of these photos are taken a long time ago but I will still use these so that the story will look more realistic as my storyline says that the couple has been dating for more than a year.

Drafts for my Film Poster

These are the two examples of film posters that I think would be successful in the film industry.

Idea 1
I really like the thought of having a negative space for my film poster. I am hoping that the image that will create in the middle creates an hourglass shape so that it links well with the title. The idea of the negative space creates a mysterious effect which somehow relates to the plot of the film. The tag line in the middle acts like the sand inside the hourglass, which I think is very effective so it helps the viewer to conjure up the clues.

Idea 2
I think that I will be using this design for my final film poster because its simplicity yet, its sophisticated. The idea of the hourglass with the images of the main actors (Rose and AJ) shows that there there time together is running out, which makes the audience thinking why and what is going to happen. I like this design because it's very enigmatic and creative also.

Pan's Labyrinth - Ideas

This scene is the beginning scene in the film called 'Pan's Labyrinth'. As you can see, the first scene is actually the ending for the film, which is similar to what I will be doing. Although we can't hear the sound of the film, as soon as the text came up, we can actually hear her breathing really loud as if she's in pain. I could use this for my theatrical trailer to hook the viewers to continue on watching it.

I find this scene interesting because of the editing. Instead of using straight cuts to change the scene, they use slide cut to take us to the next scene whenever the framing passes a tree. I could use this for my theatrical trailer when there is a cross cutting scene happening.

Gestures for Actors

Acting well is very important in the world of films. It is very important that the actors must act like they would do in reality to make the film more realistic. Gestures from our body provide hints for the viewers, which helps them justify what the actors are feeling.
Here are some examples of body language that I could use for my short:

Resting head on their hand: Bored
Open palm: Innocence, sincerity
Eyes down/closed: Boredom, sad
Pressing on their eyes closed: Negative evaluation
Tapping fingers: Impatience
Playing with hair: Lack of self-confidence; insecurity
Quickly tilted head: Interested

Modern Love

In today's society, there is actually no set of rules in love because it would depend on how the person would deal with their emotions and unpredictable feelings. There are many different types of relationships that many people deal with. Some people choose not to marry, have families and children, become a couple, and so on. Because of how modern love runs now, people now have a choice whether who to choose the type of person that they want to love.

The British sociologist Antho Giddens (1993), suggests that our modern society is at risk because of the sexuality, love, and eroticism that the modern society now conveys. It is suggested that our world are becoming less apparent having an even more diverse and multicultural population which affects how the society is becoming at risk. Also, the society today is becoming de-traditionalised as people nowadays are becoming changing, giving people more freedom of choice to how they would want to live. Because people are now thinking of what they would like to actually do in their life, more people choose what style of love they would like to follow, leading the traditional love of having women and men who had unequal roles in life and how there is different economics and social status is becoming to fall.

21st Century Influences on Romantic Love

  • Confusion of roles--- men and women have a hard time knowing what to say or how to act, especially in relation to romance.
  • Lack of education about love---we often don’t learn proper ways of loving and relating from our parents or from our partners—so where can we “get smart” about love?
  • Less traditions---we are free to live our lives as we want, not as how tradition has dictated it---which again creates the responsibility of choice.
  • More technology and information---it is easy to get disconnected from people when we spend much of our time interacting with machines and computers.
  • Less security---some feel there is not a lot to depend on these days, as there is very little stability in either the family or career worlds.
Characteristics of Modern Romantic Love
  • Element of choice
  • Can become more complicated due to choice
  • Use of free will
  • More realistic and attainable
  • Emphasizes the day-to-day commitment
  • Easier to enter into and exit from
  • Strives for equality between the partners
  • Looks to the future
  • Delays marriage and children
  • Uses reflective thinking when making decisions
Modern Love is known as being more free. The usual marriage life of having 2 children in a house and a car is increasingly being diminished along with other societal expectations for what people should follow when they become an adult. Because modern love emphasises the elements of choice and conscious decision-making, we no longer have to follow what codes and conventions of having a relationship.

Being inspired and taking some ideas

Because I am really inspired with this short film and theatrical trailer, I am going to take some ideas from it and manipulate it for my own theatrical trailer.

Short Film:

Trailer:

Sounds:
Guitar - when the scene is happy and full of joy. More upbeat guitar
Piano - when the scene is sad and sentimental. A slow and dragging type of music
Violin - can be used at the beginning and ending of the scene where the accident happens.

Camera:
Pull focus - focusing at the time first then to the person behind the object.
Long shot - when the couple is hugging
Extreme Close-up - focusing on the lips as they speak, showing that they were happy because they were smiling.
Slow motion - happy moment and sad moment as well
Two shot - as the two couple looks at the scenery, the framing shows the sides of their faces mostly focusing on their eyes (happy)
Pan - when the phone is ringing, as if the viewer is going away from it

Scene:
For my theatrical trailer, the two couple starts their relationship at the park, so when they end their relationship, I want the scene to be at the park as well.

Film Poster Inspiration

This is a film poster from a movie called '500 Days of Summer'. I really like this poster because it's very unique and creative. The whole layout of the poster provides a relation between title and the design in the poster. I like the way how the collage is laid out suggesting how the man at the bottom corner recorded those 500 days he has spent with Summer. The relief of the sun on the top of the collage creates a dynamic effect on the image because it stands out well because of the colour used on the background suggesting a vintage effect. The colours that are used in this poster is fairly simple - blue, yellow, black and white. As you may know, those colours suits really well making their target audience noticing this poster more. I really like the way how the man at the bottom corner is sitting down on a grass that seems to be giving an effect that it's cartoon-like.

For my poster, i could use this idea by having a photo montage of the two couples having fun because I find it fun to look at and my target audience could like it. This would be an example of a photo montage by David Hockey. I could use this idea and use it as a background for my poster. The background that I could use is the park scene because this is the place where the two couple started going out.

This is a book cover called 'Breaking Dawn' by Stephenie Meyer. The cover was designed by Gail Doobinin and the photo was taken by Roger Hagadone. Although this is not a film poster, I really like how simple but sophisticated this cover is, because the book is famous and well-known already. The simple colour of black, white and red, makes the cover stands out which takes the target audience's attention form buying it.
For my film poster, I could use this idea by taking a picture of just one object (in this case, it would be a hourglass) in a vintage effect.

Sounds for my Theatrical Trailer

When I begin the editing process, I would like to add sounds or music to my theatrical trailer and I will try to match the editing to the song. This will make the video more exciting as this will remove the 'dead air' that's taken while filming. Although its not going to sound realistic, but adding sounds or music will deepen the emotions created by the actors and also sets the scene for the viewers.
Because I cannot use copyright songs, I found out a website where I can find free sounds or music. (http://www.freesound.org/) This website would allow me to create the right ambience for my teaser trailer as it can help me search for sounds like car screeching, romantic music, etc.

This is an example that I found interesting which I could use for my theatrical trailer:

http://www.freesound.org/people/ZantZant/sounds/82454/
This is a short music called 'Giuseppe'. This type of music sounds very romantic which I could use when the two couples in my trailer are happy and enjoying their time together.

Deciding on Film Title

My story is about a boy who regrets that fact that he hasn't been a good boyfriend to the person that he really love in result of having no time or a chance to change it.

I have actually used a visual thesaurus for this to help myself find a good word that associates with the work time.

I didn't really like any of the words that came out from the result. However, the word 'clock' has made me think about phrases that may relate to losing love as if there is no another chances when it comes to love.

Here are some ideas that I have thought of:
- Hourglass of Love
- Love Suicide
- Playback
- Replay
- Timeless
- Timeless Affection
- Time Machine

As you can see, most of the titles are associated with time because I want it to relate with the main plot of my teaser trailer.
I didn't really like the title 'Time Machine' because it sounds more sci-fi than romance. On the other hand, I really like the title 'Hourglass of Love' because it's appropriate for the genre and also the title says it all. The word 'hourglass' refers to time which reflects that everyone have their own hourglass that suggests when we are going to die but also, it could refer to love as well by suggesting when will the love for each other will end.

Costumes, Props & Equipment List

Costumes, Props & Equipment list  - Main Boy
For the main character of the boy, I want him to look like a "bad-boy" type. The type of costume that I would like him to wear should be modern looking that doesn't look too obvious that he's trying hard to look like a bad-boy. The boy should wear casual clothing because it's the type of everyday wear that people wear especially the theme of romance aims for reality. In this case, the boy would wear clothes like leather jacket, hoodie, loose jeans, hightop shoes, cap, etc. The colour of his clothing would be mainly black and red because it adds a sense of mystery, sinister and self-control. The props that he will be using are cigarette (the boy will not be actually use the cigarette in the film as he will only use this as a prop to show that he is superior and attitude), Xbox controller (this person will be playing a lot of games to suggests that he will also be manupilating a lot with girls - in other words he is a "player" a term that the hip-hop culture uses a lot), mobile phone and laptop (he will use this device to show that he have a lot of girls to talk to because he is a player). Because this person is a "bad boy" type, he will be attracting many girls as many girls are attracted to that kind of type.

Costumes, Props & Equipment list  - Main Girl
For the main girl, I would like to represent her like a "good girl". In this case, her costume would look angelic as she would mostly wear white clothing and neutral colours. The type of clothing that I would like her to wear is somewhat modern looking just like what we see in todays society. The girl should wear casual clothing because it's the type of everyday wear that people wear especially the theme of romance aims for reality. Because this girl is a good girl, of course she would be educated. In this case, I want her to carry books, wear glasses, etc. I wouldn't want her to look like a 'geek' but show some evidence that somehow she is.

Extra Props and Equipments
car
headphones
flowers - white rose
Mobile phone
Laptop

Final Set Details

I have taken some photos of the location that I will use for my trailer. I am making sure that the locations that I will use for my teaser trailer have a sense of romantic touch to it. Also, I am aiming to shoot a sunset, moon, etc. where I believe it adds a touch of romance to it. I could also shoot at the park because most of the romantic scenes takes place at the park.

I feel that the Canal is a romantic place to hang out because it's quite yet romantic. The bridge is fantastic at night because of the Christmas lights that is added, which is very generic to many romantic films, which I am aiming to do.

I was actually planning to shoot at the ramp but there is a construction happening there so I decided to shoot here instead by selfridges. I still like this scene because again, it's romantic and the architecture suggests where the actual shooting is happening (Bullring). I am hoping to shoot a sunset here or even a moon to add a sense of romance in the scene.

Since that my actors are asian, I also want to bring the culture in the film to make it more realistic rather than faking/hiding their culture.
