Empire Magazine Analysis

Empire is a British Magazine that is currently published by the Bauer Consumer Media every month. The film magazine was launched in July 1989 by the editor name Barry McIlheney that used to be published by Emap. The magazine became the best selling film magazine in Britain that competes with the magazine called 'Total Film'.

At the very top left of the magazine, The word 'FREE' stands out well on the canvas as it attracts many reader to buy this magazine because the audience will feel as if they are getting the magazine for free. But also the word 'free' makes the reader think that they are buying this in a cheaper way. The use of capital letters emphasises the point that supports the fantastic poster images well to convince the reader to buy this magazine and engage them on reading this. Since that a lot of people are crazy about Avatar, they have used this example well to force the reader to purchase this magazine.

The masthead of the magazine stands out well on the magazine because of the use of colour with the white and black outline. Originally, the Empire logo is just a plain red however, for this issue, the masthead contains an outline to show importancy of the magazine. The main image is behind the masthead because since the image is a closeup shot, there would be no point of placing the masthead behind the image because then it wouldn't be visible. The website of the Empire magazine, price, and the issue date is placed near the masthead so that people will become more familiar with these information the same as how people recognises the masthead easily.

The coverline on the right is a complete different topic compare to the whole canvas because of the use of colour that contrasts with the colour red and black. The colour green is used in this sub heading because green reflects the topic of alien, which the image of the alien's head supports this as well.

The sub heading that is placed in the centre of the canvas uses the colour of yellow, which reflects the eye colour of the actor to show the connection between the main image and the subheading. There are also some small images at the bottom right corner to support the subheading to grab the readers attention and convince themselves to buy the magazine. Also, there is a pug placed next to the small images to give the reader more information about the images and the word 'BONUS' may standout for them.

This magazine cover follows the codes and conventions of a magazine because it contains the basic needs, such as a barcode, price, masthead, images, coverlines, etc. I feel that this magazine may attract teenagers and mostly women who are mostly attracted to this film, but also to the actors that is published in the magazine cover. I am planning to follow the codes and conventions of the magazine so that people will easily know that it's a magazine but also noticable for the people who enjoys reading a magazine.
